Not only can you overcome it, even when you get knocked down, you can still get up and walk. At his zenith, Rose captivated fans and his NBA peers from the city, past, present and future.

When I saw him when he was in high school. It was D. Rose and Sherron Collins, who was about to go to Kansas. And it was basically, who you want? Sherron averaged 30 and was gunning that thing. Rose was more of an all-around player, made plays for everybody and just had that next-level instinct. Plus he was taller and had that longer, lean athletic body. You could see he was going to be special even then. The word was out on him in the city when he was in middle school.
I felt my friends and family have gotten closer than we ever have been. They knew I was down and I was mad, but I was holding it in. I get it from my mom. I always felt I could handle things on my own. They felt I was pushing them aside when I was doing that, but it was far from that. She had to be the one hard on us. If anything we saw the dad side of her more than the mom side. You still are a product of your environment as much as your ancestry.
Few of us can relate, though many of us condemn. I pumped gas. I was a light skinned kid. I did that, I shot jump shots for money. Anything to try to take the load off my mom. And having a kid. How are you supposed to do that? It was hard. Even with school. I could have done the work, but I had a chance to go to the league out of high school.
But then they cut that my sophomore year, so I was trying to hurry up to get to college. They stopped it to so called one and done before KD. Lived in a house with 13 people, sometimes crack heads. They have to go shopping. I have responsibilities. I have someone watching everything I do, so I want to show him. My first semester credit is gone. I want him to have those standards. And then the injuries, the desolation, the slings and arrows amidst his outrageous misfortune, and then the trade last June.
Even with a disappointing and mostly dispirited season, Rose said he was surprised. I thought that she was gonna try to like stop me from playing.
I still played. With the cast on. I was still playing. Rose used his toughness and determination to earn a spot on the Simeon Career Academy basketball team. He played four years there and won back-to-back state championships.
