It's like a comic book, I remember bits and pieces and the parts I remember aren't pretty. He was in a wheelchair crossing a street and the reason he was in the wheelchair was because he was hit by a bus," and laughs.

The comedy, you presume, is the result of finding a way to deal with trauma. How does she deal with the pain? Today I asked for a quiet space with low lights. Ideally, the music would be really soft and there wouldn't be people talking, it would be serene. And music is self-soothing. That's why it exists for me. She finds time to respond to her fans through messages on Twitter, Facebook and email.

One of the latest messages is a heartbreaking story from a mother about her year-old daughter suffering a similar accident, asking for some words of comfort. There wouldn't be a reason I have it if it wasn't to share it. Sticks on the drums were aggravating to my ears so we used brushes; I didn't like the sound of the steel strings on electric bass so we used an upright. It was very logical in that sense.

In fact I still don't consider it jazz. As my drummer says, if you took away the drums and the upright bass it's really like folk. There isn't really a lot of jazz in her songs; they are more easily described as the kind of music you would have found everywhere before rock'n'roll took over, with the recent addition of a bossa nova rhythm for added sultriness.

If there is one characteristic her albums share with light jazz it is space. A lot of what's attractive about Gardot's songs are what's not played and what's not said. If everything is supported enough it allows for this space where nothing intrudes on your imagination. I like that and there's not a lot of music that does that. Despite continuing pain and what looks likely to be a future of at-best hampered living - not to mention the darkness of these past six years - Gardot does not come across as someone defined wholly by these burdens.

She has a dry line in humour and is quite playful, whistling as she waits for me to be put through and then, when I decline to whistle as well on the grounds that I have no need to offend her this early in the interview, ringing what sounds like bell chimes and announcing: "I will welcome you to the Melody Gardot interview. Online her sense of humour is evident in a video she has posted where she explains in a thick Polish accent, and then demonstrates using her favourite brand of a particular English biscuit, how she learned to eat a giant cookie in one go.

She passed. She raised me quite a bit as a young child and if it wasn't for that woman I wouldn't know any thing about The Wizard Of Oz. The Wizard Of Oz still figures in her life as her new album finishes with her version of Over The Rainbow , the only song on the album she didn't have a hand in writing.

Stylistically and emotionally it is an apt choice and it seems in retrospect that doing the song was inevitable. Like so much else in her life, fate had its own plans for Gardot.
